  What is Sandstone

Sandstone is a sedimentary stone that is typically the result of quartzite stone being eroded and redeposited by either wind or water. River beds, ocean beaches and sand dunes will all eventually become Sandstone. Sandstone is typically the youngest of the quartz based stones. Sandstone may be defined as a stone made up of grains of quartz and other minerals of fairly uniform size and often smooth and rounded. These grains in the sandstone are held together by a cementing material which may be siliceous or ferruginous. The toughness of sandstone depends mostly on the nature of this cementing material. The thickness of the individual strata of sandstone may vary from a few centimeters to a meter. Sandstone is an excellent building stone. Sandstone slabs and sandstone tiles are typically used as flooring or paving material. Sandstone is suitable for both Interior & Exterior Applications. Sandstone slabs and sandstone tile are especially useful for exterior cladding in sea shore buildings due to acid & thermal resistant properties. As such, the effect of saline winds is negligible on sandstone. Sandstone slabs and sandstone tiles are also suitable for use in chemical industries as flooring, wall fixing & lining due to its acid and alkali resistant properties. Sandstone blocks can be chiseled and dressed to a smooth surface in various attractive shapes. Sandstone is ideal for carving and architectural uses such as sandstone pillars, sandstone arches, sandstone garden furniture, sandstone fountains, landscaping products and stone arts & crafts.
